Yahoo adds video sharing to their Flickr photo website

yahoo-logo.jpgYahoo has added video sharing to its Flickr photo website in an effort to carve a niche in an on-line arena dominated by Google-owned YouTube.

Short videos can be posted along with pictures on Flickr pages that let users share images photo-album style with select people, as opposed to the way videos are displayed on YouTube for the world to see.

“Flickr is a very different experience from anything else out there,” Flickr director Kakul Srivastava said, demonstrating the video-sharing feature for AFP in the Internet firm’s San Francisco office. “We are not trying to be the highest volume site, but we are trying to be the most interesting, authentic and personal.”

The video-sharing feature rolled out Tuesday in eight languages on Flickr websites worldwide.

Only people with “pro” premium accounts, costing 25 dollars annually, can upload videos to their Flickr pages.

YouTube opens up its mobile offering

The online video firm is extending its YouTube for Mobile service from a handful of phones to a broader range of devices used by 100 million consumers worldwide.

YouTube for Mobile users will be able to access tens of millions of videos, procrastinating to their heart’s content. “It’s basically the full YouTube experience you can get on the desktop, on the phone,” Dwipal Desia, YouTube’s mobile product manager told Reuters. “We expect it to get fairly popular from our past experiences.”

In addition to giving mobile users wider access to viewing videos, YouTube is also testing software that will make it easier to upload videos from phones onto YouTube.com, a move that could see mobile users become keener to engage with the service.

YouTube launches long-awaited video piracy blocker

YouTube on Monday put in place software to block the posting of pirated videos and appease content owners that accuse the popular website of being a willing accomplice to copyright abuses.

YouTube Video Identification is billed as an anti-piracy platform custom built with the help of Google, which bought YouTube last year in a 1.65 billion dollar stock deal.

Since the purchase, Google has been under fire from video owners including entertainment giant Viacom and the English soccer league for not doing more to stop users from posting copyrighted clips at the website.

YouTube maintains it is adhering to US law by taking down copyrighted material when owners complain but has been under pressure to more vigilantly thwart the transgressions.

New York City-based Viacom has a pending billion-dollar lawsuit against YouTube for not blocking pirated videos from the website.

YouTube Video Identification software put into use at the website is a test, or beta, version that the Northern California company plans to hone.
