Apple’s 3G iPhone “no longer exclusive”

apple-phone-closeup.jpgThe 3G iPhone may be released to all service providers, rather than under an exclusive deal with just one, according to early reports.

The long-awaited 3G handset may be released under a non-exclusive deal in Italy, with Apple no longer enforcing profit-sharing schemes, claims the Italian newspaper, La Republica.

Until now the iPhone has been sold in all countries via one chosen operator, and a percentage of monthly tariff charges taken by Apple.

O2 slashes 8GB iPhone to £169

apple-phone-closeup.jpgUK mobile firms O2 and Carphone Warehouse are to cut the price of Apple’s iPhone by £100.

The 8GB iPhone will now cost £169, but the newer 16GB model will not receive a price cut.

O2 confirmed speculation that it would follow German carrier T-Mobile, which announced last week that it will drop the price for the 8GB iPhone to 99.

O2 has already reduced the cost of owning an iPhone by overhauling its tariff structure to allow users more voice minutes and text messages.

The news follows rumours of a possible 3G iPhone coming this summer. These cuts have added to speculation that suppliers are clearing out stock in anticipation of a new release.

O2 prepares to slash iPhone prices

iphoneview.jpgO2 is preparing to knock £100 off the price of the iPhone tomorrow, according to reports.

The claim was made on the website Mobile Today, which also suggests that Carphone Warehouse is set to follow. Neither company was willing to confirm the rumours though O2 says further information will be forthcoming this afternoon.

If the rumours prove to be true, it will undoubtedly fuel speculation that vendors are clearing stocks to make way for the widely anticipated 3G iPhone, expected in June.

Other commentators suggest it could be an aggressive attempt to bolster unconvincing sales of the device in order to meet sales targets.

Mobiles may be allowed on UK flights

Passengers on UK-registered aircraft could soon be able to use their mobile phones to make calls and send text messages, according to Ofcom.

The regulator, which had been examining the proposals since last year, says the plans are subject to approval by the relevant UK and European aviation bodies.

Ofcom says the policy has been developed with other European Union countries and the system could be used in European airspace.

Under the plans, airlines wishing to provide the service would allow passengers to use their own handsets once the aircraft reaches a minimum height of 3,000 meters. They would not be allowed during take-off and landing for safety reasons.

iPhone takes on BlackBerry with corporate email

apple-phone-closeup.jpgApple said on Thursday its iPhone will soon support corporate email, targeting a new market and challenging the dominance of RIM’s popular BlackBerry devices.

Apple also said it will roll out tools for developers to create software for the iPhone, news that was accompanied by a pledge from legendary venture capital firm Kleiner Perkins Caufield Byers to set up a $100m (£50m) “iFund” to back iPhone software start-ups.

“This takes the iPhone from being not really in the running in the enterprise to being very much in the running and gives RIM a serious challenge,” said Van Baker, an analyst with market research firm Gartner.

Google & Yahoo gear up for a mobile war

Google has launched its Google Gears for Mobile browser extension for Internet Explorer on Windows Mobile 5 and 6 devices, which allows users to access their web-based applications even when they are offline. This could mean that when there is no wireless access, or the network is experiencing delays, applications will still work.

The application won’t work with devices running Opera or other web browsers, however, which rules out the iPhone and some other devices.

Meanwhile, Yahoo has developed a new bookmarking tool, Yahoo onePlace, which keeps track of web favourites, such as news feeds, sites, images, video, etc from a single place on their mobile device. Yahoo onePlace will be available in the second quarter of 2008.
