Divide on games industry ratings
10/07/2008 by swordfish.
A row has broken out between the games industry and the UK’s content classifiers over who should regulate video games in the future.
UK games industry body Elspa has called on the government to replace the British Board of Film Classification (BBFC) role’s in assessing video games. The industry favours its own voluntary system, called Pegi.
The BBFC’s Peter Johnson said Pegi was a “box ticking exercise” based on “no consultation with parents”.
The two systems have different approaches to classification. The BBFC system is enforced by law and based around the symbols used to classify films, while Pegi is a voluntary code.

XP Service Pack 3 hits Automatic Update today
10/07/2008 by swordfish.
The third and final Service Pack for Windows XP will be made available through Automatic Update today.
SP3 has been available for download from Windows Update since the beginning of May, but will now be pushed out on to machines that have Microsoft’s Automatic Update service switched on.
The launch of XP SP3 was marred by a conflict with Microsoft’s Dynamics Retail Management System, which forced the company to temporarily withdraw the service pack. The Pack also caused problems with some AMD-based HP PCs, which went into an endless reboot cycle because the manufacturer used an XP image based on Intel, rather than AMD, chipsets.
