O2 prepares to slash iPhone prices

iphoneview.jpgO2 is preparing to knock £100 off the price of the iPhone tomorrow, according to reports.

The claim was made on the website Mobile Today, which also suggests that Carphone Warehouse is set to follow. Neither company was willing to confirm the rumours though O2 says further information will be forthcoming this afternoon.

If the rumours prove to be true, it will undoubtedly fuel speculation that vendors are clearing stocks to make way for the widely anticipated 3G iPhone, expected in June.

Other commentators suggest it could be an aggressive attempt to bolster unconvincing sales of the device in order to meet sales targets.

Tesco to launch digital download service

tescodigital.jpgTesco said on Tuesday it will open an online shop next month selling music, films, games and television programmes for iPods and other digital players.

The supermarket chain’s new download service will compete with Apple’s iTunes site as well as British operators like HMV, 7Digital and Woolworths.

It will replace its existing digital site that offers a limited selection of music in a format that can not be downloaded directly to iPods.

Tesco Commercial Director Graham Harris said he expected the launch in May to “shake up” the download market by attracting a wider range of consumers. “We wanted to create an exciting and easy-to-use entertainment shop that Tesco customers of all ages and technical ability can use and trust,” he said.

Download prices have yet to be announced.
