Apple is voted brand with biggest impact

applenews.jpgThe Apple brand has the biggest impact on the world’s consumers, while Microsoft and the US nation brand are those considered most in need of a remake, a survey showed on Monday.

The poll by online magazine brandchannel.com asked its readers to identify the brands with the greatest impact on their lives, and say how they affected readers’ behaviour and their view of the world.

The nearly 2,000 professionals and students who voted named Apple overwhelming winner. The creator of the iPod and Mac computer triumphed in six categories including most inspiring brand and the one readers cannot live without.

Facebook blunder exposes private photos

facebook.gifA recent security lapse on Facebook which allowed access to private photo libraries highlights what can go wrong if companies use public social networking sites without security, experts warn.

Users’ pictures, including those of Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg and socialite Paris Hilton, were exposed on the site, even though the photos were tagged as being visible only to the member and associated friends.

David Lavenda, vice president of marketing and product strategy at web security firm WorkLight, said: “Just imagine what would happen if a business-to-consumer document such as an employment contract were to leak in this way.

Adobe’s free Photoshop Express

freeonlinephotoshop.jpgAdobe has launched a beta version of its free online image editor Photoshop Express, offering seamless integration with Facebook and Picasa.

Once registered, users are given 2GB of space to store images, which can be edited and publicly shared via the My Gallery feature.

The service works especially well with Facebook, importing all images and albums from an account with titles and descriptions intact.

Mobiles may be allowed on UK flights

Passengers on UK-registered aircraft could soon be able to use their mobile phones to make calls and send text messages, according to Ofcom.

The regulator, which had been examining the proposals since last year, says the plans are subject to approval by the relevant UK and European aviation bodies.

Ofcom says the policy has been developed with other European Union countries and the system could be used in European airspace.

Under the plans, airlines wishing to provide the service would allow passengers to use their own handsets once the aircraft reaches a minimum height of 3,000 meters. They would not be allowed during take-off and landing for safety reasons.

Microsoft offers free support for Vista SP1 installs

vista_speed_main_400×300.jpgVista users encountering problems when they upgrade to Service Pack 1 can breathe out: the company is giving away free support for those installing the service pack.

The transition to the service pack has not been problem-free for many users, with issues such as computers falling into endless reboot cycles and broken applications rearing their head.

Normally, only Vista users who bought the retail product would be eligible for free support but, for SP1 installation, even users with an OEM copy of Vista on their computer can get Microsoft’s help, according to the official Vista blog.

Apple launches the Safari browser for Windows

applenews.jpgSafari 3.1, which was launched on Tuesday, will run on Windows XP or Vista and, of course, Mac OSX. Apple released a beta for the Windows-supporting version in June last year.

Apple has claimed that the browser is the fastest available for Windows. In a Tuesday statement, Cupertino said it “loads web pages 1.9 times faster than [Internet Explorer] 7 and 1.7 times faster than Firefox 2 [and] runs JavaScript up to six times faster than other browsers”.

“Safari 3.1 for Mac and Windows is blazingly fast, easy to use and features an elegant user interface,” said Philip Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of worldwide product marketing, on Tuesday.

To try it out go to the Apple web site and download a copy.
