Final goodbye for early web icon
29/02/2008 by swordfish.
A web browser that gave many people their first experience of the web is set to disappear.
Netscape Navigator, now owned by AOL, will no longer be supported after 1 March 2008, the company has said.
In the mid-1990s, as the commercial web began to take off, the browser was used by more than 90% of people online. Its market share has since slipped to just 0.6% as other browsers such as Microsoft’s Internet Explorer (IE) and Firefox have eroded its user base.
The company recommends that users upgrade their browser to either Firefox or Flock, which are both built on the same underlying technologies as Navigator.

Home Office laptop and disc ‘bought on eBay’
28/02/2008 by swordfish.
The Home Office is investigating the apparent sale of one of its laptops, along with an encrypted data disc, on eBay.
The laptop had been bought on the auction site then taken to an IT company near Manchester for repairs. The technicians at the repair centre, at Leapfrog Computers in Westhoughton, subsequently found an encrypted Home Office disc underneath the keyboard.
Leapfrog sales manager Jonathan Parry told ZDNet.co.uk on Thursday that the person who had bought the laptop had brought it into the shop on Monday because “it wasn’t working properly”.

iPhone finds favour with business users
27/02/2008 by swordfish.
O2 may be concentrating its iPhone efforts on consumers but research suggests it shouldn’t neglect business users, who apparently love the touchscreen interface.
The Apple device beats the competition hands down when it comes to user-satisfaction rates, according to a survey of enterprise smartphone users.

Internet Explorer 8 launched in private beta
25/02/2008 by swordfish.
Microsoft has begun private beta testing of Internet Explorer 8, ahead of the release of the first public beta later this year.
A limited number of “qualified beta testers” have been invited to download the new version of Microsoft’s web browser, which promises to be its most standards-compliant to date.
Precisely what the new browser will offer remains a secret, but Microsoft has revealed that it passes Acid 2, the de facto industry test for standards compliance.
It also contains a new mechanism for rendering websites that have been written to work properly in Internet Explorer 6, which by Microsoft’s own admission was far from standards compliant.

Microsoft reveals the programs Vista SP1 will break
21/02/2008 by swordfish.
Microsoft has published a list of programs that will not work or will suffer from reduced functionality after the installation of Vista SP1.
The list of programs is composed mostly of security applications, such as Trend Micro Internet Security 2008. However, programs such as the New York Times reader also feature on the list. Users are advised to install updates from the application vendor to fix the problem.
“Windows Vista Service Pack 1 contains many security, reliability and feature updates for Windows Vista. A program may experience a loss of functionality after you install Windows Vista SP1. However, most programs will continue to work as expected after you install Windows Vista SP1,” the company said.
