Firefox makes gains on Internet Explorer

firefoxsuccess.jpgFirefox continued to make ground on Internet Explorer in 2007, even threatening to overtake Microsoft’s dominance in several European countries.

Figures released by Xiti Monitor reveal that Firefox is close to toppling Internet Explorer in countries such as Finland, where it enjoys a 45% market share, as well as Poland, Slovenia and Hungary where it also enjoys market share between 40% and 42%. In Western Europe, Germany leads the way with a 34% share.

While Firefox continues to grow, the figures reveal that Internet Explorer is still by far the dominant browser holding a 66.1% share of the worldwide market, as opposed to Firefox’s 28%, which still represents a new high for the open-source browser.

Of the remaining browsers, Opera fares best with a 3.3% share, while Safari trails with only 2%.

YouTube opens up its mobile offering

The online video firm is extending its YouTube for Mobile service from a handful of phones to a broader range of devices used by 100 million consumers worldwide.

YouTube for Mobile users will be able to access tens of millions of videos, procrastinating to their heart’s content. “It’s basically the full YouTube experience you can get on the desktop, on the phone,” Dwipal Desia, YouTube’s mobile product manager told Reuters. “We expect it to get fairly popular from our past experiences.”

In addition to giving mobile users wider access to viewing videos, YouTube is also testing software that will make it easier to upload videos from phones onto YouTube.com, a move that could see mobile users become keener to engage with the service.

Symbian mobile worm spreading fast

Security researchers are warning of a new piece of malware targeting smartphones equipped with the SymbianOS.

SymbOS/Beselo is currently spreading through the wild in Asia, deceiving victims by posing as an image file.

The attack is launched via an MMS message in which the user is sent a file called either ‘beauty.jpg,’ ‘love.rm’ or ’sex.mp3′.

On being launched, the worm copies itself into the user’s memory card and sets itself to load on startup. The malware then attempts to send itself to every contact on the user’s phone. It also generates random numbers to send itself to and attempts to spread to any nearby device via Bluetooth.
